Gastroenteritis is a condition that causes irritation and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach and intestines. Gastroenteritis can be caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. The common routes of infection include food (especially seafood), contaminated water, contact with an infected person, unwashed hands and dirty utensils. Gastroenteritis is also called intestinal flu, traveler's diarrhea, viral enteritis, and food poisoning.

Gastroenteritis usually starts suddenly with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The other symptoms can include loss of appetite, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, lethargy and body aches, and rarely blood and pus in stools. Gastroenteritis usually is of acute onset, normally lasting less than 10 days and self-limiting. But it may be life-threatening in debilitated people.

Useful herbs

Acacia senegal

Inhibiting bleeding, inflammation of the intestinal area, as an emollient, in cough, burns, sore throat and as a vehicle for other medicines (for example. suspending insoluble powders) (gum); bark, leaves and gum are used to treat gastritic disorders,, haemorrhage, ophtalmia, colds, diarrhoea, gonorrhea, leprosy, typhoid, urinary tract infections and as emollient, antitussive and astringent ; the gum is considered an aphrodisiac. The flowers are relished by honeybees.

Acalypha australis

For diarrhea, eczema, enteritis, fever, hemorrhage, nausea.

Acanthus mollis

For dislocated joints, for burns, in treating irritated mucous membranes within the digestive and urinary tracts (plant); to soothe burns and scalds (crushed leaves)

Aconitum heterophyllum

Snakebite, fever, as a tonic, in abdominal pain, diarrhea, hemorrhoids,in the fevers of contagious diseases and inflammation of the intestines.

Aconitum violaceum

Relieves pain due to arthritis and gout. Useful in treating Lung disorders, leprosy etc. Poisoning, Anti-inflammatory and febrifuge, it is used in the treatment of snake and scorpion bites, contagious infections and inflammation of the intestines (Tsarong & Tsewang, 1994).

Alocasia indica

Useful in inflammation and diseases of the abdomen and spleen (rootstock); to stings of giant nettle. The juice of the petiole is dropped into the ears of children for otorrhoea. For stomach ache (rhizome).

Anemone acutiloba

In the treatment of fevers, liver ailments and poor digestion (leaves); bleeding from the lungs, coughs, cancer, childbirth, diphtheria, enterosis, enuresis, fracture, hernia, incontinence, leukorrhea, ophthalmia.

Antidesma ghaesembilla

Used as a drink to treat diarrhea, to promote menses, to recover from childbirth, and to invigorate (decoction of the bark); applied externally to relieve headache, skin diseases and abdominal swelling, to promote healing of wounds and as a water bath to reduce fever (leaves).

Coptis chinensis

Controls bacterial and viral infections, relaxes spasms, lowers fevers and stimulates the circulation, for diarrhoea, acute enteritis and dysentery, insomnia, fidget, delirium due to high fever, leukaemia, otitis media, acne, boils, abscesses and burns whilst it is also used as a gargle for mouth and tongue ulcers, swollen gums and toothache (root).

Coptis deltoidea

In the treatment of diarrhoea, acute enteritis, dysentery, insomnia, fidgets, delirium due to high fever, inflammation of the mouth and tongue, leukaemia, conjunctivitis and otitis media, increases the phagocytosis of white blood cells on Staphylococcus aureus, is antihypertensive by dilating the coronary artery and blood vessels of the internal viscera, relaxes the smooth muscles of the blood vessels and excites the smooth muscles of the uterus, bronchi, stomach, intestines and urinary bladder (root).

Corchorus olitorius

Chronic cystitis, gonorrhoea and dysuria(leaf); for aches and pains, dysentery, enteritis, fever, pectoral pains and tumors; to restore the appetite and strength (cold infusion)

Cymbogon martini

Used for acne, sinusitis, sore throat, stimulating the immune system, bacterial and viral infections of the intestines, vaginitis, urethritis, nervous exhaustion, to warm, improve circulation, calm, reduce stress, to open sinus and breathing passages, uplift moods, to increase loving feelings and euphoria, improve mental clarity.

Dioscorea japonica

For diarrhoea, enteritis, enuresis and spermatorrhoea (tubers); as contraceptives and in the treatment of various disorders of the genitary organs as well as in a host of other diseases such as asthma and arthritis (roots)

Ferula asafoetida

Nervine stimulant, digestive agent and a sedative,excellent for asthma, bronchitis, whooping-cough, hysteria,impotency, woman and children's ailments,gastroenteritis, for depressed circulation and intestinal function. For respiratory problems and as a circulatory stimulant, lowering blood pressure and thinning the blood.

Kaempferia galanga

As a carminative, diuretic and expectorant; in treating nausea, flatulence, dyspepsia, halitosis, rheumatism, catarrh and enteritis (tuber). Powdered tubers are administered for coughs and pectoral affections.

Lespedeza cuneata

Testicular tuberculosis, hernia, enuresis, dental caries, toothache, infantile marasmus/ascariasis, snake and dog bites, skin ulcers, dysentery and enteritis (plant decoction).

Lonicera japonica

In dysentery, chronic psoriasis, to reduce blood pressure (plant); acute rheumatoid arthritis, mumps and hepatitis (stems); upper respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia) and dysentery (stem and flowers together); syphilitic skin diseases and tumors, bacterial dysentery, colds, enteritis, pain, swellings etc (flower buds)

Nelumbo nucifera

A decoction of the flowers is used in the treatment of premature ejaculation. A decoction of the floral receptacle is used in the treatment of abdominal cramps, bloody discharges etc. The flower stalk is haemostatic. It is used in treating bleeding gastric ulcers, excessive menstruation, post-partum haemorrhage. The stamens are used in treating urinary frequency, premature ejaculation, haemolysis, epistaxis and uterine bleeding. A decoction of the fruit is used in the treatment of agitation, fever, heart complaints etc. The seed is sedative. It is used in the treatment of poor digestion, enteritis, chronic diarrhoea, insomnia, palpitations etc. The plumule and radicle are used to treat thirst in high febrile disease, hypertension, insomnia and restlessness. The root is tonic. The root starch is used in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery and a paste is applied to ringworm and other skin ailments. It is also taken internally in the treatment of haemorrhages, excessive menstruation and nosebleeds. The root nodes are used in the treatment of nasal bleeding, haemoptysis, haematuria and functional bleeding of the uterus. The plant is a folk folk remedy for cancer, modern research has isolated certain compounds from the plant that show anticancer activity. Embryos are used for reducing fever, for treating cholera, haemoptysis, spematorrhoea and syphilis.

Ocimum basilicum

Sweet basil acts principally on the digestive and nervous systems, easing flatulence, stomach cramps, colic and indigestion. It is taken internally in the treatment of feverish illnesses, poor digestion, nausea, abdominal cramps, gastro-enteritis, migraine, insomnia, depression and exhaustion. Externally, they are used to treat acne, loss of smell, insect stings, snake bites and skin infections. The mucilaginous seed is given in infusion in the treatment of gonorrhoea, dysentery and chronic diarrhoea. It is remove film and opacity from the eyes also. The root is used in the treatment of bowel complaints in children. Extracts from the plant are bactericidal and are also effective against internal parasites.

Orchis mascula

As a tonic to increase nerve strength and as an aphrodisiac; in dysentery, diarrhea and persistent fever; in the treatment of irritations of the gastro-intestinal canal; The young flower extract is used in treating premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.

Phellodendron amurense

In the treatment of acute diarrhoea, dysentery, jaundice, vaginal infections including Trichomonas, acute urinary tract infections, enteritis, boils, abscesses, night sweats and skin diseases.

Phellodendron chinense

For acute diarrhoea, dysentery, jaundice, vaginal infections including Trichomonas, acute urinary tract infections, enteritis, boils, abscesses, night sweats and skin diseases (bark)

Rauvolfia caffra

For enterosis, fever, itch, malaria, measles, nervousness, scrofula, swelling, water retention and on wound; pneumonia, rheumatism, colic, coughs and toothaches (bark); insomnia and intestinal worms (root).

Scutellaria baicalensis

Calms the foetus in pregnant women, in the treatment of enteritis, dysentery, diarrhoea, jaundice, chronic hepatitis, urinary tract infections, hypertension, threatened miscarriage, nosebleed and haemorrhage from the lungs or bowel (root)

Smilax china

Old syphilitic cases and is also used for certain skin diseases, including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, enteritis, urinary tract infections, skin ulcers etc.

Stellaria media

As a plaster in swolen areas and broken bones, to relieve constipation, useful in rheumatism, inflammations of the digestive, renal, respiratory and reproductive tracts, asthma, congestion, and bronchitis, obesity, high cholesterol, in severe inflammations of skin, such as erysipelas, scalds and burns, crural ulcers, haemorrhoids, eczema, to soothe severe itchiness and inflammations of eyes (plant); as a poultice or ointment for skin irritation and inflammation as well as for skin ulcers. Boils, carbuncles, and abscesses

Styrax benzoin

Used in the treatment of asthma, bronchosis, cancer, catarrh, colic, constipation, corn, cough, cramp, dermatosis, enterosis, gout, immunodepression, laryngosis, nervousness, rheumatism, stomachache, stroke and ulcer.

Trigonella foenum-graecum

As a tonic, emollient (in rheumatism, abscesses, boils and ulcers), inflammations in the intestinal tract, bronchitis, increasing the secretion of gastric juices, hemorrhoids, diabetes, diarrhea and in veterinary medicine (as an ointment, emollient).
